About the finishes

I only use high-quality, expensive finishes for my products. Some people like shiny finishes, some like more subtle sheens, and some prefer traditional methods. These are the finishes I typically use:

Waterlox Original Gloss is a resin-modified Tung Oil that cures into a waterproof film that is safe for food contact and is super-glossy. It is recommended that this finish not be used on cutting boards, as this will cut through the finish and allow water into the wood, so please take care not to cut your steak in this bowl! This finish cannot be easily reapplied and can’t be “touched up”.

Osmo Polyx-Oil is a more of a satin sheen:

“Osmo Polyx-Oil is a general purpose Hardwax-Oil wood finish that is derived from natural vegetable oils and waxes. Resistant to water, dirt, beer, wine, cola and saliva, Osmo Polyx-Oil is microporous and molecularly bonds with the wood, meaning it does not crack, flake, peel or blister.”

Reapplication of Osmo can be done for a fee but should last for years of service without requiring it.

Boiled Linseed Oil & Beeswax is more of a traditional wood finish that wears more quickly but allows the wood to achieve its own patina over time. The boiled linseed oil (BLO) is applied to the piece and then the natural beeswax (locally sourced) is friction-applied to the piece, sealing in the BLO where it will cure in a few days. This finish can be reapplied.

Walnut Oil is also a more traditional finish that can be reapplied as many times as desired. I get mine from Lee Valley:

“This 100% pure walnut oil is a finishing oil that provides a non-toxic finish that will resist water and alcohol because, like tung oil, it is a drying oil. Walnut oil is ideal for food-contact use because it has a light palatable taste and a pleasant odor. Ours is not intended for use in foods, but only on wooden bowls, spoons, etc., that come in contact with food.”
